Q: What is mildew? What does mildew look like?
A: Mildew is what you see when mold, which is a living fungus, that anchors itself to surfaces, but the two words are used interchangeably.. In order to eradicate mildew, kill it at its roots. Mildew is usually black but can appear pink, red, or green. For occasional mildew problems, use Clorox Commercial Solutions® Tilex® Mildew Root™ Penetrator & Remover. For more serious problems, consult a mold remediation specialist.
Q: What are the most common locations for mildew to grow?
A: Mildew often grows in bathrooms and other damp areas as a result of a combination of poor ventilation, moisture, and food sources (body oil, soap scum, paint, and oxygen). In bathrooms, check for mold and mildew in grout, on windowsills, on the ceiling, and under the sink, among other places.
Q: Why does mildew grow in caulk, grout and on the ceiling?
A: Mildew grows in grout because it is a porous surface that is constantly wet. Mildew is also often found on bathroom ceilings because of poor ventilation and a ready supply of food and moisture. In addition, mildew can grow behind caulk if its airtight seal has been broken. Unfortunately once mildew moves behind the caulk, it is hard to penetrate with a cleaner and may require removal and a fresh caulk application. If fresh caulk is applied, the area should first be prepared with a bleach solution.
Q: What can be done to prevent mildew from growing?
A: Mildew needs moisture, a source of nutrition, and the right temperature to grow. To prevent mildew from growing, improve ventilation by installing a fan or opening windows. Use Clorox Commercial Solutions® Tilex® Mildew Root™ Penetrator & Remover to more deeply penetrate porous surfaces and kill mold at its source.
